It became a federal holiday in 1885.\nThe Monday Shift: In 1968\, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to create three-day weekends for federal employees. The holiday moved to the third Monday in February.\nIncluding Lincoln: Because Abraham Lincoln’s birthday is also in mid-February (February 12)\, the Monday observance naturally came to honor both leaders\, and eventually all U.S. presidents\nOfficial Name: The federal government still officially calls the holiday “Washington’s Birthday\,” though Presidents’ Day is the popular name\n\n
